New in Nairobi.

I am Lisa, the newest QES intern from the University of the Fraser Valley. I start my internship tomorrow with Aga Khan University and the East Africa Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. I am joining current Intern, Jeremy Wagner, to support supermarket research focused on the procurement of produce, meats, and poultry. We will be considering where food is coming from and how this impacts local farmers. This project will resemble the study completed by the 2015 East Africa Interns in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We plan on using the information in a new way by reflecting on the affect of urbanization and considering pathways of change. Within these pathways the intention is look at possible consequences. Perhaps revitalizing African agriculture, farmers being unable to meet standards forcing them into an immutable state, and the possibility of breaking down current African food systems. This what we have discussed for the future but for now we are going to begin collecting information from nine local supermarkets.

It’s going to be a lot of work but we are up for the challenge!
